Biography

Der junge Countertenor Nils Wanderer ist erster Preisträger des Bundeswettbewerbs Gesang 2022 und gewann bei Placido Domingo's Operalia 2022 als erster Deutscher und einziger Countertenor.


Nach seinem Opera Course an der Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, singt er als Künstler unter anderem Hautpartien in Oper und Oratorium am Teatro Massimo Palermo, den Salzburger Festspielen, Opera de Lille, Staatsoper Berlin und Hannover, dem Vatikan in Rom, Händelfestspiele Halle, Barbican Centre London, Schloss Versailles, Philharmonie de Paris, L'Auditori Barcelona unter der Leitung von Kent Nagano, Jordi Savall, Christian Thielemann, David Bates, Patrick Lange und gibt Liederabende und Konzerte mit namhaften Liedbegleitern wie Daniel Heide oder Marcelo Ameral von Europa über Nordamerika bis Indien.


Diese Spielzeit ist er als Speranza in Monteverdi's "L' Orfeo" und als Edgar in Reimann's "LEAR" an der Staatsoper in Hannover zu erleben.


Ebenso singt er Tolomeo in Händel's "Giulio Cesare" an der Oper Franfurt, Britten's Oberon in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" beim Blackwater Festival in Dublin und gibt eine Konzertreise mit Schubert's "Winterreise" in verschiedenen Konzertsälen Kanada's auf Einladung der Deutschen Botschaft.


Mit seinem eigenen Projekt "Wanderer zwischen den Welten" begegnen sich Barockmusik und elektrodide Klänge auf Augenhöhe und sprengen die Grenzen der Ernsten Musik und der Unterhaltungsmusik.


2024 wird er das Festival " Zwischen den Welten" in Kooperation mit Schlösser und Gärten Baden - Württemberg als künstlerischer Leiter gründen und leiten.


Eine enge Zusammenarbeit verbindet Ihn auch mit Peter Plate und Ulf Leo Sommer von der Band "Roselstolz", welche Ihm die Rolle des "Todesengels" für ihr neues Musical "Romeo und Julia" am Theater des Westens Berlin auf den Leib geschrieben haben.


Neben seiner Tätigkeit als Opernsänger, arbeitet Nils Wanderer international als Schauspieler, Choreograph und Regisseur für Oper & Theater.


2024/25 wird er Artist in Residence am Staatstheater Mecklenburg-Vorpommern und zeichnet sich als Regisseur, Choreograph und Solist verantwortlich für 2 neue Opern und eine Uraufführung im Ballett.

Winner of the 2022 Bundeswettbewerb Gesang and Second Prize Winner of the world’s most prestigious opera competition “Operalia” in 2022, Nils Wanderer has been hailed for his "beautiful, dark, well developed and amber colored voice which deploys a wide palette of colors throughout the action, with irony, tenderness, resentment, authority, magnanimity, all with a remarkable pronunciation and a magnetic theatrical presence." Recently, Nils has garnered widespread acclaim for his portrayal of Oberon in the new production of Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Opéra de Lille, helmed by Laurent Pelly and Guillaume Tourniaire. Diapsaon lauds him, stating, "Nils Wanderer, a countertenor with perfectly unified registers and a supernatural ease of phrasing."

Season highlights 2023/24 include Nils headlining the world premiere "Don't you Nomi?" dedicated to the visionary German countertenor Klaus Nomi and directed by Julia Lwowski at the Staatsoper Berlin, the role of Edgar in Reimann’s Lear (Stephan Zilias/Joe Hill-Gibbins production) at Staatsoper Hannover, Mary Sunshine in Kander's Chicago at Komische Oper Berlin (Barry Kosky | Adam Benzwi), Tolomeo in Handel’s Giulio Cesare at both Oper Frankfurt (Simone Di Felice/Nadja Loschky production) and Blackwater Valley Opera Festival Ireland.

With the complicity of Jordi Savall, Nils performed Handel’s Messiah at the Salzburg Festival and Bach’s St. Matthew Passion at the Paris Philharmonie, Chapelle Royale de Versailles, and Barcelona Auditori. As a soloist, he has collaborated with orchestras such as Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Le Concert des Nations, La Folia, Stuttgarter Kammerorchester, Karlsruher Barockorchester, La Sfera Armoniosa and has appeared at theaters and festivals including the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro Massimo Palermo, De Nederlandse Reisopera, Barbican Centre London, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Handel Festival Halle, and Festival de Música Antigua de Sevilla. As a Lieder singer, he has given recitals with esteemed pianists such as Daniel Heide and Marcelo Amaral.

His concert and oratorio repertoire spans over four centuries from Purcell, Vivaldi, the Bach family, Handel and Pergolesi through Berlioz, Wagner and Elgar to Bernstein and Cage. Several of his concerts have been recorded by the BBC, Bavarian Radio Station, SWR Radio, Arte, Mezzo and Medici.tv.

In January 2024 the world premiere recording of Johann Sigismund Kusser's forgotten Baroque opera "Adonis" will be released by cpo, where he sings the role of Apollo in Jörg Halubek's interpretation.
